Sizing a sound system for a room that holds 300 to 500 people is not a matter of picking a box count from a chart. It is a matter of reading four published numbers — coverage angle, maximum SPL, frequency response and amplifier power — and then deciding where the low end comes from. Nearly every line array cabinet in this class stops producing useful output somewhere between 45Hz and 95Hz, which is why the subwoofer is not an accessory in a 300 to 500 capacity room; it is half of the system. The four published numbers that decide the array

Before thinking about subwoofers, read these four lines off the specification sheet of the cabinet you are considering. They are the only numbers that survive contact with a real room.

Coverage angle (H × V)

This tells you how the box spreads sound. The PL210LA is published at 100° × 60° (H × V); the HDL26 is also published at 100° × 60° (H × V); the PL210 system, which is measured as a complete array plus subwoofer package, is published at 90° × 90° (H × V). Horizontal coverage decides how wide a fan you can fill from one hang or one stack; vertical coverage decides how steeply the energy is aimed, and therefore how much of it lands on the audience rather than the back wall.

Maximum SPL at 1 metre

The PL210LA is listed at 130 dB, the HDL26 at 131 dB and the PL210 system at 130 dB. Treat this as a single-cabinet reference figure measured at one metre, not as the level you will get at the back of a 40 metre room. It is useful for comparing cabinets on the same basis and for sanity-checking a design, not as a prediction.

Frequency response

This is the number that decides whether you need a subwoofer at all and how much work it has to do. The PL210LA and the PL210 system both run 45Hz to 20000Hz. The HDL26 runs 95Hz to 20000Hz.

Power

The PL210LA carries a 700W RMS Class-D amplifier with a 1400W peak rating. The HDL26 carries 250W RMS with a 500W peak. The PL210 system is rated 1000W + 700W × 4 RMS — 1000W for the subwoofer and 700W for each of the four line array cabinets in the package.

Why the line array hands the low end to a subwoofer

Look again at the two frequency-response figures above, because the gap between them explains most configuration decisions in this capacity range. A cabinet that reaches down to 45Hz, like the PL210LA, already covers a useful part of the bass range. A cabinet that starts at 95Hz, like the HDL26, does not: everything below 95Hz has to be produced by something else. In a speech-only system that trade-off may be acceptable, but for live music, DJ sets or playback-heavy events in a 300 to 500 capacity room, the bottom two octaves carry most of what the audience perceives as impact.

Two details in that table matter more than the rest for a venue in this size range. First, the 18-inch subwoofer uses a 4-inch voice coil on a 125 OZ ferrite magnet, which is the specification that determines how far the cone can travel before it runs out of control. Subwoofer placement: settle these three questions before you order

Configuration is mostly geometry, and geometry is decided on site. Before you commit to a package, settle the following.

Where can the subs physically go?

In a 300 to 500 capacity room the realistic options are usually a ground-stacked pair flanking the stage, a centre cluster under a front-fill position, or a split left-right placement at the stage lip. Each changes the arrival time of low frequencies at different seats. Confirm the available footprint and sightlines with the venue before you specify cabinet count.

Do you need directional low end?

If the stage is open-backed or the room has a reflective rear wall, low frequency energy spilling backwards becomes a stage-volume problem as much as an audience problem. Ask your supplier what subwoofer arrangements the DSP in the package supports and whether a cardioid-style configuration is available on the model you are buying.

How much headroom does the programme need?

A speech and background-music event and a full band place very different demands on the same room. Because the PL210 system allocates 1000W RMS to the subwoofer and 700W RMS per array cabinet, the limiting factor in practice is usually the programme type rather than the room dimensions. Match the package to the loudest thing you expect to put through it.

Signal flow, DSP and protection

All three products share the same basic signal path: one combo input accepts a balanced or unbalanced line, the internal DSP applies its selected preset and limiter, the Class-D amplifier drives the transducers, and one male XLR output passes signal on to the next cabinet or to a powered subwoofer. That single output is what lets you daisy-chain a hang without a separate distribution amplifier.

Distribution planning is straightforward but worth doing before load-in: add up the RMS figures above rather than the peak figures, and remember that a powered subwoofer and four powered array cabinets draw from the same supply.

Where a venue requires suspension rather than pole mounting, confirm the rigging method and hardware against the specification sheet for the specific model you are ordering — do not assume a bracket that ships with one cabinet transfers to another.

Cabinet material affects handling as much as durability. Configuration checklist for a 300 to 500 capacity room

Work through these in order before sending an enquiry.

  1. Room geometry. Floor dimensions, ceiling height, stage position and whether the audience is seated or standing.
  2. Coverage requirement. Compare the published horizontal coverage of the cabinet (100° for the PL210LA and HDL26, 90° for the PL210 system) against the width you need to fill.
  3. Low-frequency requirement. If your programme has content below 95Hz, an HDL26-based design needs a subwoofer; if it extends to 45Hz, so does a PL210LA-based design.

Does a 300 to 500 person venue need one subwoofer or several?

It depends on the room shape, the programme and where the subs can sit, not on the headcount alone. Work from the subwoofer location and the low-frequency content of your programme; the PL210 package pairs one 18-inch subwoofer with four 10-inch array cabinets as a matched starting point.

Can the HDL26 be used on its own without a subwoofer?

For speech and programme material with no content below 95Hz, yes — that is the published lower limit of its frequency response. For music with bass content, a subwoofer is required.
